Superpower geographies

Geopolitics has been an important part of geography for over 100 years. At first interest was in the geographical strategy of empire and the relationship between power and territory. Recently the study of superpowers has expanded from the realm of military conf lict to embrace international relations in the sense of economic development and trade, the globalisation of culture, and even matters of interest to all, such as climate change.

It would be possible to produce a very interesting analysis of superpower rivalries in the Mediterranean at the time of the Romans but modern studies mainly focus on the growth of tension between the USA and the Soviet Union after 1945 — the Cold War. The BBC website has plenty of varied material on this and the Cold War International History Project is another excellent source. One thing to watch for when surfing the internet in this area is that many sites have particular political agendas and do not give a balanced view.
