Floods

All the AS geography specifications include some study of rivers and flooding. The internet is helpful for finding case studies or extending textbook explanations of processes.

This Online was prompted by the floods of 18 July 2009 in Durham, which were the result of an unusually powerful rainfall event. The River Wear burst its banks and access to roads and buildings in the city was affected. A professor of geography was seen on the television news sandbagging the front of his house and a deep gully opened up in fields near the city centre — dubbed by the press the Durham Grand Canyon.
