World cities (Figure 1) are so called because they are connected commercially and technologically with similar cities across the globe. They are cities that are globally powerful and hold influence in terms of trade, political strength, innovation and communications. They often have a multicultural population and this variety of cultures, while it may have problems, creates places that are hugely diverse, exciting and vibrant.
Three world cities are leaders in the global financial market and have other important global functions: New York, London and Tokyo. Two other cities of major importance for the regions in which they are located are Los Angeles (Pacific rim) and Frankfurt (Europe).
