question and answer

This Question and Answer looks at an AS fieldwork question for AQA. All the major exam boards expect students to carry out fieldwork and the comments here on answering an exam question will be useful to any A-level student. The question is printed in bold type and the student’s answer is in italic. The examiner’s comments are the responsibility of GEOGRAPHY REVIEW and have been neither provided nor approved by the examination board. David Redfern writes here in a personal capacity.

The AQA specification requires you to complete investigative fieldwork at both AS and A2. This allows you to develop skills associated with planning investigations, collection of primary and secondary data, and presentation, interpretation and evaluation of results. As part of AS you are expected to take the Unit 2 examination (1 hour) where this fieldwork is assessed in Question 2.

A variety of different questions can be asked about this fieldwork. In all cases, however, you will be asked about the various stages of the fieldwork process: from establishing an aim and hypotheses, to data collection, presentation and analysis, and formulating conclusions. The example below follows this process, giving answers (and examiner commentary) to a series of questions that could be asked, all concerning a piece of fieldwork based on a river.
