The geography of leisure and tourism has retained a place in the new A-level specifications. The CCEA devotes one of its A2 ‘debates’ to ecotourism, Edexcel looks into the rebranding of places (which includes tourism) as an AS option, OCR also has an AS option on ‘the growth of tourism’, and the WJEC uses leisure and recreation as one of its A2 options. AQA has some coverage at A2, in the development and globalisation option.
Some care is needed in this area of geography because it is not easy to find a precise focus. The field is vast and case studies seemingly endless. There is also what I call the taken-for-granted danger that, as regular consumers of leisure and occasional tourists, we think we already have a secure basis of knowledge. Challenging this complacency is one of the duties of the critical geographer.
