It’s normal to feel daunted. After all, it’s been a long time since you did a real exam, and it’s been a long time since exams were sat under normal conditions. But the good news is your specification hasn’t changed and the same tried-and-tested techniques for exam success still work. Even if you haven’t revised as much as you should have, there’s still enough time to study smart and boost your grade by putting the following tips into practice.
A major part of success on all English literature specifications is knowing your set texts. Ideally, you’ll have read each novel and play three times. Your first reading should be brisk — typically, in a couple of sittings without much time in between. This helps you get to know the text, enjoy the story and become familiar with the characters. Your second reading is a deeper consideration. Typically, you read in sections, undertake activities, have discussions and respond with your own essays. Your third reading is crucial. It brings the text together after you’ve studied it in parts. You’re likely to enjoy making new connections and to appreciate aspects you hadn’t noticed before.
