Theme and genre in unseen prose

Andy Haley explores what it takes to bring out the theme and genre aspects of a sociopolitical literature extract

During your A-level English literature course, you will be asked to respond to an ‘unseen’ text extract. The contexts in which these extracts appear will differ depending on your particular exam specification. Some will be extracts from a much longer text, and others will be complete texts in themselves. Some will be wholly unseen, in that there is no expectation that you have encountered them before; the example that follows is one of these. Others will be significant in terms of their place within a text that you have already studied, such as a play.

Whatever sort of unseen extract you are presented with, there are certain ways in which you will need to approach it to address the assessment objectives (AOs). This means analysing:
