Anne Varty discusses how women’s poetry has achieved a high profile in recent years through the impact of the recent appointments of female national poets across the nations of the United Kingdom

AQA (A): Paper 2 Modern times (Carol Ann Duffy)

When, in 2009, Carol Ann Duffy became the first woman ever to hold the post of poet laureate for the UK, she used the occasion to turn the spotlight on the work of her contemporaries: ‘I see this as being a recognition of the great women poets we now have… and I decided to accept it for that reason’ (Telegraph, 1 May 2009). On day two of her laureateship she celebrated by curating a collection of 13 poems by women from across the English-speaking world, published in the Guardian on 2 May 2009. She stated, ‘It is a historic day for women and for poets in Britain.’
