In a sense, all forms of communication require a sort of translation. We all have our own individual way of expressing ourselves (our idiolect), and we need to make adjustments when listening to or reading the words of other people to make best sense of them. The term ‘translation’, however, is normally taken to refer to the process whereby a word, phrase or text is changed into another language, while retaining the sense of the original.
