The dark side of love

Poetry in the AQA anthology

Luke McBratney considers how the poets of the AQA Anthology of Love Poetry present the complications, complexities and uncertainties of love

AQA (A): Paper 1 Love through the ages

Perhaps the emotion that we most value and which we consider to be intrinsic to our humanity is love. It is there at the central moments of our lives: the unconditional love felt by parents at the birth of their child, the overwhelming feeling that brings people to long-term commitment and marriage, the overriding emotion as people remember a lost loved one. Popular songs frequently celebrate its highs and lows relatively unproblematically: from the Beatles’ ‘All you need is love’ (1967) to Whitney Houston’s ‘I will always love you’ (1992) and ‘I’ll never love again’ by Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper (2018).
