Varieties of English

Charlotte Purkis surveys some of the opportunities offered within English studies to help you navigate the marketplace beyond A-level

Today there are many different ‘Englishes’ and ‘literatures’ within UK higher education. You may think only of ‘English literature’, ‘English language’, or ‘English language and literature’. But look closer, and you will see many other degree titles, including ‘Modern English literature’, or English and another subject, and others such as ‘Literary studies’ or ‘Comparative literatures’. Here, we help you identify some of the key differences in what is on offer as you seek that perfect course on which to build your unique future.

Initially you may lean towards a broad learning experience that could potentially encompass ‘everything’. A course starting with survey modules suits many students, but some programmes offer breadth in terms of how to approach studying English in the many different ways that form the discipline as a whole.
