AQA (B): Paper 2 Texts and genres: ‘Elements of crime writing’
Agatha Christie’s Jane Marple is the most famous female detective of the so-called ‘Golden Age’. Described by her best friend Dolly Bantry as ‘the typical old maid of fiction’, in 12 novels and 20 short stories published between 1927 and 1979 Miss Marple encounters more than enough poisonings, stranglings, stabbings and drownings to justify her belief that ‘The depravity of human nature is unbelievable’ (‘Strange Jest’, 1944, in Miss Marple’s Final Cases, 1979).
