All Quiet on the Western Front

Cicely Palser Havely encourages you to read a superb novel from the other side of the lines in the First World War

Rainer Maria Remarque’s novel All Quiet on the Western Front (Im Westen Nichts Neues) was published in Germany in 1929, ten years after the armistice that brought the First World War to an end. Remarque was born in Osnabrück in Lower Saxony in 1898. At the age of 18 he volunteered for the army and was withdrawn from the front badly wounded in June 1917. Although his own experience of war is self-evident in this account of young German soldiers living and dying on the front line, All Quiet is actually a beautifully crafted work of fiction.
