Matthew Welton

Matthew Welton was born in Nottingham in 1969 and is assistant professor in creative writing at the University of Nottingham. He has published three collections of poetry with Carcanet. His first, The Book of Matthew (2003), was a Guardian Book of the Year and won the Jerwood-Aldeburgh First Collection Prize. His second, We needed coffee… (2009), a Poetry Book Society choice, has probably the longest title of any book of poetry — it runs to 101 words. ‘Zwei’ is from that collection and is the second poem in a sequence entitled ‘Four-letter words’. His third collection, Number Poems (2016), has just been published.
