Kathryn Maris was born in New York and went to college there, studying with a number of well-known US poets, including Kenneth Koch. In 1999 she moved to London where she was influenced by aspects of British writing, in particular the use of traditional forms. ‘Lord Forgive Me’, a rhymed sonnet, is from her second collection, God Loves You, published in the UK by Seren Books in 2013. Many of the poems in this collection use a religious image as a metaphor for a secular experience: here a woman’s sense of unworthiness in relation to her lover.
