Analysing ‘Book Ends I’

In the first of this new series, Steven Jackson examines the workings of Tony Harrison’s poem and suggests some general rules for approaching ‘the unseen text’. In future issues of ENGLISH REVIEW we will look at how to address your unseen text analysis to meet the Assessment Objectives

When answering questions on texts that you have never seen before, you need to be able to apply the methods and approaches that you have learned during your English literature studies. Read Tony Harrison’s poem ‘Book Ends I’ (www.tinyurl.com/th-bookends) and use the advice below to develop your analysis of this unseen text.

If the subject is clear, begin with a concise statement of what the poem is about. (If the subject is uncertain, do not be afraid to say so.) Pay special attention to the opening lines because they are likely to anticipate key features in what follows.
