The remit of the following essay was to choose a passage of approximately two pages from Brian Keenan’s memoir An Evil Cradling, and to consider ways in which the content is presented and relate that to the memoir as a whole. It does not matter if you do not know the book or cannot refer to the chosen passages — the benefit in reading this piece is to note the qualities of Kate’s analytical technique. Under the new A-level specification the targeted Assessment Objectives for this assignment are:

Articulate creative, informed and relevant responses to literary texts, using appropriate terminology and concepts, and coherent, accurate written expression.
