Peter Smith remained on the editorial board of ECONOMIC REVIEW for 40 years, even after he retired from his university post. Peter was an immensely kind man, who mentored others and who wanted to help people understand economics. ECONOMIC REVIEW was a labour of love for him, and we wish to show our appreciation by noting his particular gifts and his important contribution to our field.

Peter was the first person in his family to go to university and he only chose economics A-level due to timetabling issues at his school. He had four different teachers over the 2 years. Despite these difficulties, he became hooked on economics and wanted to learn more about it at university. He ended up picking the newly established University of Warwick as the place to continue his studies. The campus was not even finished when he went for his interview.
