INTERVIEW

Making the most of an economics work placement

Caroline Elliott interviews James Burchell about his studies and recent work placement

JB My name is James Burchell and I am currently a final-year student at the University of Warwick. I study BSc (Hons) Economics, which is a 3-year course. I took a placement year after my second-year studies.

JB My interest in economics grew during school. I had some broad questions on my mind, such as, ‘Why is there so much inequality in the UK?’; ‘Why do governments choose to provide some services and not others?’; ‘Why don’t we make everything locally and stop buying so much from overseas?’ And, as a massive football fan, I couldn’t help but wonder, ‘Why do transfer fees and player wages keep going through the roof?’
