Macroeconomic policy in recent decades has mainly focused on the use of monetary instruments. However, since the Covid-19 pandemic, attention has also been paid to the size of the national debt. In this column, Peter Smith explores the data that inform us about the state of the public finances

Since the substantial spending that the government undertook during and after the Covid-19 pandemic, concerns have been expressed at the size of the level of debt faced by the nation. The sustainability of the national debt was discussed by Steven Proud in ECONOMIC REVIEW Vol. 40, No. 4, April 2023.

In this article, I will discuss some of the issues that arise when measuring and monitoring the key issues of government spending, revenue and debt.
