At the time of writing, 6,057 people are waiting for organ transplants in the UK, while in the past year 3,641 people have received transplants. There is clearly an ongoing need for organs suitable for transplant to save lives.
In England, people sign up to the organ donor register — they have to opt in. This means they give their consent for the use of their organs if they die prematurely and unexpectedly in an accident. Unfortunately, although 80% of the public support organ donation, less than 50% ever get around to signing this register.
