Universal basic income: inevitability or unrealistic ideal?

question and answer

Trade and the balance of payments

Whichever exam specification you are studying, the topic of trade and the balance of payments is important. In this column, James Powell highlights the importance of practising reading and answering the questions on the topic under exam conditions

This question and answer looks at how to think about the wording of essay questions, plan structured answers, and tailor knowledge to address command words. It does this by looking at two 25-mark questions on the topic of trade and the balance of payments. The first section will look at how to plan answers, the second suggests how issues can be explained and analysed in detailed chains of reasoning.

Essay questions are worth 25 marks, which means that writing a strong answer is essential to achieving a top grade. Satisfactory answers often contain plenty of good knowledge and understanding but do not pay attention to command words. As a result, they frequently fail to deselect irrelevant concepts and do not focus on analysing and evaluating the most important issues.
