Table 1 tells us Country R is an upper-middle-income country according to its gross national income (GNI) per capita, and a high human development country on the basis of its human development index (HDI). The trend in human development is shown in Figure 1, which shows that Country R has seen relatively little increase in human development since 2000.
Figure 2 shows annual growth in gross domestic product (GDP) per capita since 1980, which reveals an interesting story for Country R. The pattern suggests that the economy has suffered much instability during this period, with the most successful experience being between 2004 and 2007.
