Economics at university

Alice Beckett, who recently completed her degree in economics and politics at the University of Bristol, reports on what it’s like to study economics at university and highlights the variety of contemporary issues that economics can shed light on

Having originally come to university to study aeronautical engineering, I had no previous experience of studying economics when I began my economics and politics degree. I had chosen my A-levels with an engineering degree in mind, so had studied mathematics, physics, and government and politics.

Although, like most people, I was aware of the economy, knew that it affected me, and did my best to follow news stories regarding economic issues, the most experience I had of economics in school had come through the study of political ideologies and political approaches to economic management in my government and politics A-level. I knew very little, if anything at all, about economic theory, the way that economics would be taught or the extent of the influence of economics on society and everyday life. Fortunately, this unfamiliarity didn’t last long!
