Country L

Figure 1 Trends in the human development index

Country L is classified by the World Bank as an upper-middle-income country, with GNI per capita of $9,800 in 2012 ($16,530 in PPP terms). Its human development index of 0.769 places it in the high human development category, ranking 64 out of 186 countries in the world. Country L had a population of around 29 million in 2012, of which nearly three quarters lived in urban areas. However, Country L is well endowed with natural resources, being an important source of tin and rubber and producing more than half of the world’s palm oil. It also has reserves of oil and gas.

Figure 1 shows trends in the human development index since 1980, comparing Country L with a range of other countries around the world. You can see from this that the country has made steady progress throughout this period, although the pace of improvement has slowed since the turn of the century.
