AL Where did you first study economics?
DC At the University of Birmingham in 1969–71, having abandoned a PhD in a very abstract field of pure mathematics. I enrolled on a master’s programme in economic planning, which because it was low-grade mathematical programming taught me little other than the powerful concept of duality. But I was able to attend many courses outside my chosen course, so I found myself studying monetary economics, trade theory, econometrics amongst other things. And I read voraciously, something I still do.
