Figure 1 shows a development diamond comparing Country H with the UK. It is apparent that Country H outperforms the UK on each of the indicators on the graph. So why have I chosen this particular country for a ‘development’ profile?
When Country H became fully independent in 1965, it was a middle-income country with GDP per capita about a quarter of that in the UK, slightly above South Africa and slightly below the world average. Since then, it has been transformed into a modern high-income economy.
