When providing these development profiles for ECONOMIC REVIEW, I usually choose to discuss low or lower middleincome countries. By way of a contrast, this profile is of a country that is classified by the World Bank as an upper middle-income country, and as a high human development country by UNDP. GNI per capita in 2011 was US$10,720, and the human development index (HDI) was 0.730 in 2012. Based on the level of GDP, Country G was the seventh wealthiest country in the world in 2012.
This being so, is it valid to discuss Country G as a development profile? It is clear that to reach this stage in its development, Country G has made progress with economic growth and human development. However, this does not mean that it can be regarded as being fully developed, nor that it has overcome all of its problems. Let’s look at some of its features.
