Country F is among the poorest countries in the world. It was classified by the World Bank as a low-income country with GNI per capita of $460 in 2011, ranking it 201 out of 213 countries in the world. In terms of the UNDP’s human development index, Country F registered a value of 0.327 in 2012. On this basis it was ranked 185 out of 187 countries. Country F has a population of about 24 million people, with about 70% living in rural areas. Between 2000 and 2005 the population grew at 2.6% per year. Life expectancy at birth is 50.7 years.
Country F has had a difficult history. It was a Portuguese colony from the early sixteenth century until the mid-1970s, when a coup led to independence. There followed a period of civil war, which lasted until 1992. It is estimated that about a million people died in the civil war, and millions more fled abroad or to remote parts of the country. Most of the population (81% in 2003) continues to work in the agricultural sector, and the country suffers from poor infrastructure. Only 29% of people in rural areas have access to improved water and only 12% of the total population have access to electricity. Severe floods in 2000 and 2001 caused major damage to infrastructure.
