C ountry D is classified by the World Bank as a lower middle-income country, with GNI per capita in 2010 of US$1,790, making it one of the poorest countries in its region. However, with a human development index (HDI) of 0.663 in 2011, the United Nations classify Country D as showing medium human development — it was ranked 108 out of 187 countries on this measure. Country D has a population of around 10 million people with about one-third living in rural areas.

Poverty and inequality are high in Country D — the Gini Index is estimated at 57.3, and 14% of the population live below the poverty line of PPP$1.25. For many of the country’s poorest farmers, coca (the raw material for cocaine) has been a main source of income, so attempts to eradicate the crop have been politically sensitive.
