Country W has had a rather chequered history since it gained independence in 1962. There was much political instability during the period that followed, with coups in 1966, 1971, 1979 and 1985. During the 1970s the then president expelled most of the country’s entrepreneurs and effectively dismantled what little manufacturing activity had developed in the country. It is estimated that up to half a million people were killed in state-sponsored violence in the 1970s and early 1980s.
