Country V is classified by the World Bank as an upper-middle-income country, with GNI per capita in 2008 of US$7,200. In terms of the human development index (HDI), Country V falls just below the threshold of a ‘very high human development country’, a new category introduced in 2010. Country V registers a value of 0.866, which is in the ‘high human development’ range.
This does not mean that Country V is without its problems, as it was hit by deep recession and an economic meltdown in 2001. This triggered unrest, and left more than half of the population living in poverty. This is in spite of the country having rich natural resources and a well-educated workforce.
