The global economy has been in recession. Television, radio and the newspapers told us this repeatedly. They informed us that the UK was hit especially hard, suffering more deeply and recovering more slowly. This was not good news for an unpopular government facing a general election, as governments are judged on the economy’s performance — among other things, of course. A weak economy provides fodder for the opposition.

As you embark on your study of economics, you will find that the national economy’s performance is one of the key topics.
