Country T is classified by the World Bank as a lower middle-income country, with GNI per capita in 2008 of US$1,130, and as a medium human development country by the United Nations. However, in both cases, Country T is towards the lower end of the range.
Country T is the largest country in its continent and is geographically diverse. In recent years, the world’s attention has been focused on two civil wars spanning more than 20 years, which have cost the lives of 1.5 million people and driven some 2 million people from their homes. There is substantial inequality within the society. In April 2010, it was announced that there was an impending food emergency in the south of the country, when a survey showed that some 46% of children under five were malnourished. This situation arose partly because of the conflict, in which warring tribesmen resorted to stealing cattle in order to survive. There has also been a serious drought affecting food production.
