HOW SCIENCE WORKS

Second-generation biofuels

Global demand for energy and concerns about the climate emergency require a move away from fossil fuels towards more sustainable energy solutions. Biofuels have been proposed as one of the ways in which energy can be generated more sustainably

In the transition to more sustainable sources of energy, it is important to examine the anticipated and unanticipated consequences of energy innovations such as secondgeneration (2G) biofuels. We need to find out who benefits from these innovations, and why.

Social Transformative Research Informing Processes of Environmental Science (STRIPES) is a research project that unites researchers from the social and natural sciences in the UK and Brazil. They question how sustainable energy transitions are, or are not, being achieved, through the study of the application of cutting-edge theoretical chemistry in the production of biofuels.
