Steel

Steel is one of the most widely used materials on Earth, particularly in construction and engineering and in the manufacture of motor vehicles. It is estimated that there are over 20 billion tonnes of steel in use, equivalent to well over 2 tonnes for every person on Earth

The Thames Barrier was designed to protect London from flooding. It is a system of stainless steel-plated hollow flood gates. About 45 000 tonnes of steel was used in its construction
