Alkenes contain one or more carbon–carbon double bonds.
The four electrons in the double bond of ethene give the region between the two carbon atoms a high density of negative charge. Electrophiles will be attracted to this negatively charged region, and tend to undergo electrophilic additions, leading to the loss of the carbon–carbon double bond.
