Does warm water freeze faster than cold water?

It may seem counterintuitive, but it is claimed that warm water will freeze faster than cold water. As a good, sceptical chemist, you no doubt require evidence before you will believe an idea as seemingly bizarre as this. You could seek out papers on the subject, but why not investigate the effect for yourself?
