Following an announcement in December 2015, the seventh row of the periodic table is now officially complete. Four superheavy elements (with atomic numbers 113, 115, 117 and 118) were created by bombarding heavy-metal targets with beams of ions. These highly unstable atoms can only exist for a fraction of a second before undergoing radioactive decay into other elements. They have been given temporary designations until the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) agrees on their permanent names and symbols
