As demonstrated in the silver mirror test to distinguish between an aldehyde and ketone (see CHEMISTRY REVIEW, Vol. 23, No. 4, pp. 2–7), silver has been extensively used for producing mirrors, as it is the best known reflector of visible light.
The required surface is dipped in silver nitrate and ammonium hydroxide solution and the silver is precipitated out onto the glass via a reducing agent.
