Flame tests and emission spectra

A flame test is used to identify metal species in a compound, based on the colour of the flame it produces when heated. You may remember flame tests from your GCSE studies, but they are also a great way to see the phenomenon of emission. Emission and absorption spectra are included on the A-level specifications as part of atomic structure.
