Millions of people are in constant danger of arsenic poisoning by drinking water from wells sunk into particular types of rock. Arsenic is a metalloid (or semimetal) found in group 15 of the periodic table, and exists as a number of allotropes. Arsenic forms both organic and inorganic compounds, many of which are very toxic. Some of the organic arsenic compounds are zwitterionic. Certain arsenic compounds are highly carcinogenic, while others are used to treat cancer. To monitor the environmental risks to human health, analytical chemists need to invent new, cheap ways to measure arsenic levels.
