The Elements — A Very Short Introduction

Gecko glue

A friend of mine once had a pet gecko named Brian. Whenever I saw him locked up in his glass enclosure, he seemed to spend more time stuck to the sides than he did on the ground. This was polished glass, and at the time we didn’t have the slightest idea how he managed this amazing feat.

This remarkable phenomenon has fascinated biologists and philosophers for more than 2000 years, and an actual explanation has only been fathomed in the last decade or so. Ask a biologist before this time and most would wince and change the subject, or admit that they didn’t really know.
