A cup of tea contains a rich variety of aromatic compounds including many polyphenols. The interactions of these compounds within our bodies create the combination of calming and stimulating effects we experience when we drink tea. Antioxidants present in tea are involved in redox reactions and scavenge harmful free radicals that can cause cell damage.
