The brittleness of concrete is a drawback for the construction industry, but chemists and biologists are working to solve this problem. Improvements in concrete composition will have a positive environmental impact, as it will lead to reductions in concrete manufacture and hence a lowering of the emission of carbon dioxide (a greenhouse gas).
