Halogenoalkanes cause destruction of the ozone layer by releasing free radicals into the stratosphere, which catalyse the breakdown of ozone molecules. Man-made sources of halogenoalkanes are declining, but they are only part of the story. There is a global search for natural sources of halogenoalkanes, one of which could be leaf cutter ant colonies. Sampling of the gases from ant colonies, followed by analysis using gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry, has produced some interesting results.
