Carbon monoxide (CO) is a toxic gas. Here, the effect this gas has in the atmosphere is discussed, focusing on its reactions with species such as the hydroxyl free radical, as well as showing how CO levels can be measured.
Carbon monoxide is a colourless, odourless and highly toxic gas with the chemical formula CO. Carbon monoxide is one of the most important trace gases in the atmosphere as it controls the oxidative capacity of the atmosphere and hence the concentrations of other influential trace gases such as methane (CH4). It is produced from a variety of sources throughout the world.
