At AS, questions about rates of reaction are qualitative and involve no calculations, but they do require careful use of Maxwell-Boltzmann curves and clear explanations of how the rate of a reaction is affected by a change in temperature or concentration, or by the use of a catalyst. At A2, rates of reaction are studied quantitatively, sometimes using graphs, and students have to be able to deduce rate equations from experimental data. Other calculations at this level use these rate equations to obtain a value for the rate constant.
