Phenol

Martin Bond/SPL

The production of phenol from benzene is the first step in the manufacture of some important polymers, including the nylons, polycarbonates and the phenolic resins.

An important chemical made from phenol is bisphenol A, which is used to make the polycarbonates. It is also reduced to cyclohexanol, which is used in the manufacture of polyamides (nylon 6 and nylon 6,6). Phenol is also used to make a range of thermosetting polymers (resins), particularly with methanal.
