Chemistry and fireworks

Ingram

There is lots of interesting chemistry involved in the simplest of fireworks — a sparkler. This Answer Back question provides an opportunity for you to demonstrate your understanding of different ways in which chemical reactions can be represented — balanced symbol equations, ionic equations, half equations — as well as testing your knowledge of precipitation and redox reactions, oxidation numbers, electrolysis, giant ionic lattices and rates of reaction.

The question is taken from the June 2008 Salters AS Chemistry paper ‘Chemistry of Natural Resources’, set by OCR, which has given permission for its use here. The responsibility for the answers and comments rests solely with CHEMISTRY REVIEW.
